Matters of the Heart

Things in this world seems to be getting crazier and crazier. So much uncertainty, so much hurting, so much hating...just so much!
For that reason, I don’t watch the news a whole lot. It’s just a matter of protecting my psyche. So, when I heard about George Floyd’s murder, per usual, I hesitated to watch the video. It took me a couple of weeks to finally garner up enough courage to watch it. And just like most of us, I was immediately affected. I was disturbed. I was grieved. I was angry. I was sad.
The flood of emotion I felt took me back to another time I felt similarly emotional and the whole reason Creating Awareness for Christ was birthed. I vividly remember after the Aurora, Colorado shooting in 2012 the fear that many people experienced as a result of the heinous act. It also grieved my spirit to witness people decide to not go into public places out of sheer fear. It disturbed me. I was saddened by it. I was angry at the evil behind it. However, witnessing that level of fear compelled me into action.
But not in a way that you would expect. The action I took focused solely on the heart of man (and woman). Part of Creating Awareness For Christ’s mission states: ’Creating Awareness for Christ is a ministry dedicated to bringing Christ to the hearts of all people.’ God quickened my spirit back then and every time I get wind of these horrific occurrences with the revelation that these scenarios (and the many scenarios before, in between and after) are all issues of the heart.
You see, nothing changes until the heart changes. Scripture tells us, “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.” (Luke 6:45 NKJV)
In other words, a man’s behavior is evidence of what is in his heart. If a man’s heart isn’t changed, neither will his behavior be changed.
The bottom line is that in order to see change in our people and in our society, there needs to be a heart transformation. We cannot put the cart before the horse in this matter. Laws can be changed, consequences can be made more severe. But none of it will matter until the hearts change.
It is my prayer that for those of us who know the love of Christ, that we get bold in sharing His love with others. That we get aggressive with it. That we are purposeful about it. It’s necessary. This is the only way that we will clear up the matters of the heart.
